Los Alamitos can look ahead to big battle

Los Alamitos (4-0) looked like a team that wanted to dispatch its opponent quickly Thursday, scoring five touchdowns in the first quarter and two in the second. Four plays into the game, sophomore Samuel Corder-Lee blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone to give the Griffins a 7-0 lead.

Los Amigos followed with a quick touchdown pass from Dylan Lagarde to Joe Locher, an interception return for a score by sophomore cornerback James Stea, and touchdown runs from Paul and Kendall Holmes before the game's first 12 minutes expired.

Lagarde hooked up with senior Kyle Roberts for scores of 19 and 71 yards, respectively, and Paul took the opening kickoff of the second half back 76 yards for the eighth and final touchdown.

University (2-1) managed just 104 yards of total offense. It was the 293rd career victory for Griffins coach John Barnes, giving him the fourth most in California high school history.

"I don't really think about that stuff," Barnes said.

"But pretty soon, you got to start thinking about that stuff." But to get No. 294, Barnes knows his team is taking a big step up in class against Santa Margarita. "This is all about next week and the week after (against Edison)," Barnes said.

"We'll see where we stack up there." We have two very tough games back-to-back."And like his players, it's a game Barnes has been thinking about "long before tonight," he said. After outscoring their first four opponents 203-43, the Griffins are ready to take the next step.

"I've been waiting. I've been telling our coaches that I can't wait for this game," Lagarde said. "That's what you live for – tough games. "Hopefully, we'll come out with a victory in the end, play hard and know that it's a solid win and know that we earned it."

Los Alamitos thwarts West Adams

Los Alamitos got more than it bargained for Friday against West Adams Prep, using a fourth-quarter goal-line stand and tough running by Cody Paul and Joe Locher to grind out a 21-8 victory.

After scoring 70 and 56 in its first two victories, the Griffins (3-0) found moving the ball much more difficult against the Panthers (0-3). After a West Adams score late in the third and a punt bouncing off Paul’s helmet, recovered by the Panthers, the Griffins defense held three times from the 1-yard line to preserve a 21-8 lead. Locher took over rushing duties, getting the ball out from the Los Al’s end and sealing the victory.

The Griffins scored early after a punt from deep in their own end bounced off a Panthers returner before being recovered by Samuel Corder-Lee at the Panthers 10. Locher went in from the 1-yard line. A roughing the kicker penalty on the point after set the Griffins up to attempt an onside kick in Panther territory. They recovered, and Dylan Lagarde hit Kyle Roberts for the first of two second quarter scores from 10 yards out.

Los Al vs. Mayfair

The eighth-ranked Griffins scored eight first-half touchdowns on their way to a 56-21 victory against Mayfair at Bellflower. Quarterback Dylan Lagarde threw three touchdowns in the final 1:35 of the second quarter as the Griffins (2-0) opened a 56-14 lead at halftime against Mayfair (1-1), ranked third in the Southeast Division. Los Alamitos, ranked 10th in the Pac-5 Division, opened the season with a 70-14 victory against Norwalk.

“We’re playing good on offense,” Los Alamitos coach John Barnes said. “Everybody who touches the ball for us is a playmaker.”

Lagarde put the ball in the hands of the Griffins’ playmakers. The senior completed 9 of 11 passes for 229 yards and five touchdowns. Barnes pulled him after the first series of the second half. Lagarde was especially sharp in late in the first half. He tossed a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Kendall Holmes with 1:22 left in the half as Los Alamitos opened a 42-14 lead. The play was set up by a 35 gain by running back Cody Paul, who finished with three touchdowns.

Kyle Roberts then intercepted his second pass for Los Alamitos, returning the ball to Mayfair’ 45. On the next play, Lagarde tossed a 45-yard touchdown to Josh Caiquo with 30 seconds left. Los Alamitos’ Brett Beighton sent a low kickoff to Mayfair but Los Alamitos recovered a muff with 26 seconds left at the Monsoons’ 35. Two plays later, Lagarde tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Caiquo, who again beat his man deep and scored with six seconds left. Los Alamitos also started the first period fast. Roberts’ intercepted a pass on Mayfair’s first play from scrimmage to set up his 38-yard touchdown reception while Samuel Corder-Lee blocked an early punt to set up a 1-yard run by Paul. The Griffins also got two sacks from safety Daniel Tyler.

No. 6 Los Alamitos dominates Norwalk, 70-14

NORWALK -- In last season’s opener at Veterans Stadium, No. 6 Los Alamitos scored 34 points in a shutout victory against Norwalk. On Friday night, they scored 49 in the first half. Senior running back Cody Paul had just six carries, but he he went for 137 yards and three touchdowns as Los Alamitos dominated Norwalk, 70-14, at Excelsior Adult School in Norwalk. Despite the offensive explosion, Coach John Barnes did not feel his team showed just how good they are.

“We made a lot of big plays early on,” Barnes said. “But we don’t know how good we are. I think they (Norwalk) are a little bit young, and it showed tonight.” While the offense was stellar for Los Alamitos, who which gained 321 total yards in the first half alone, Barnes said that Norwalk’s unconventional “Wing-T” offense was not a good test for his defense to start the season. “We need to see a conventional team to see how we can really play (defensively),” Barnes said.” The offense aced their its test.

Los Alamitos senior quarterback Dylan Lagarde went 8 for 10 for 180 yards and three touchdowns from 32, 40, and 10 yards. He also ran for a score as the first half came to an end. Wide receiver Kyle Roberts had three catches, two for touchdowns. He ended the night with 68 receiving yards with a 22.6 yard-per-catch average. Luke Pastell’s only catch was a 40-yard touchdown grab early in the third quarter, the last series the starters played in the game. Los Alamitos will take on Mayfair next Friday on the road.

Hot off the presses – no surprises – “kickoff 2011: sunset league preview” (August 29, 2011) …by dan albano OC Register
“OCVarsity continues its league-by-league previews for high school football with the Sunset League. Find the coaches’ poll, individual team previews, players and teams to watch and much more.

COACHES POLL:
1. Edison, 7-4 in 2010 (31.5 poll points)
1. Los Alamitos, 8-3 (31.5 poll points)
3. Huntington Beach, 6-4 (21)
4. Newport Harbor, 6-5 (19)
5. Fountain Valley, 3-6-1 (15)
6. Marina, 3-7 (10)

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Edison. The Chargers received a major boost in late August when Mater Dei transfer wide receiver Sedric Hill was declared eligible by a state appeals panel. Hill is one of the county’s best receivers and teams with Troy Baljeu and Curren Provost to give Edison one of the top receiving cores in the county. Throwing the ball will be Chase Favreau, a dual-threat quarterback who was the Sunset League’s offensive player of the year in 2010. Hill’s clearance also helps Edison on defense. The senior also plays cornerback. Edison also has talent at other spots such as running back and linebacker but some of those players will go both ways. If Edison’s lines play well and the Chargers stay relatively healthy, watch out.

Los Alamitos: The defending league champion Griffins appear to have the ingredients for another powerful offense. They return quarterback Dylan Lagarde, running back Cody Paul and wide receiver Kyle Roberts, who has an offer from Air Force. They also have two standout linemen in Neko Sanders and Alex Redmond. The challenge for Los Alamitos will on defense but they will receive a lift with the return of middle linebacker Joe Locher, who suffered an ankle injury last season. The Griffins also could have some of the best special teams in the county with Paul on returns and Brett Beighton kicking. …”

The victory improved their overall and league records to 7-2 and 4-0, respectively, as they get ready to face Edison for the league title Thursday night at Veterans Stadium. The winner of the Los Alamitos-Edison showdown will be the league's top seed to the CIF-SS Pac-5 Division playoffs, earning the first-round home game that goes with that.

Los Alamitos Cruise in 30-0 Newport Loss
Sailors The Griffins stormed ahead early and cruised to a 30-0 victory over Newport Harbor on Thursday in a Sunset League game at Veterans Stadium. Los Alamitos walked off of the Veterans Stadium field after beating No. 9 Newport Harbor (4-3, 1-1) for the first time since 2006.

Newport Harbor had won its previous three games against Los Alamitos, with the largest margin just four points. The Griffins defense held the Sailors to 40 passing yards and 90 rushing yards. Harbor had been averaging 24 points a game.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Los Alamitos awoke from its offensive doldrums to ruin Fountain Valley's homecoming and defeat the Barons, 24-7, Friday night in both teams' Sunset League opener at Huntington Beach High. The No. 12- ranked Griffins, who had scored just 10 points in its previous six quarters, tallied 21 third-quarter points to erase a 4-point deficit and snap a two-game losing skid. The Griffins (4-2, 1-0) got rolling on its third play of the second half when Cody Paul took a sweep off the left side for a 47-yard touchdown run that gave Los Alamitos a 10-7 lead. After a 3-and-out by the Barons (2-3-1, 0-1), Los Alamitos struck quickly again, this time on an 87-yard touchdown run by Richard Turner - again behind left tackle Ben Wysocki and left guard Derrick Laureano.

Neuheisel Continues To Beef Up UCLA:
Bruins Pick Up Another Talented Lineman
Posted July 6, 2010 at: www.bruinsnation.com

Los Alamitos offensive lineman Ben Wysocki (6-5, 290) has committed to UCLA, his father, David, said in an e-mail. Wysocki is a great get for the Bruins. The Los Al coaches have raved about Wysocki, who also received an offer from Stanford. Bruins just picked up their 5th commitment of this recruiting season. OL Ben Wysocki from Los Alamitos committed to Coach Rick Neuheisel last night via email. Wysocki might not be a 4-5 star recruit at this snap shot of time but his commitment is significant for number of reasons that should have everyone excited about the state of UCLA's (methodical) recruitment under CRN.

First, Wysocki now becomes the 3rd OL commit of this recruiting class. It sends a clear signal in terms of where CRN's priority is during this recruiting season. Perhaps the most serious question mark around Neuheisel from his UDub and Colorado days was that he was always too enamored with skill players and didn't pay requisite attention to the big guys in trenches. I think at this point given the way he has been recruiting CRN has answered that question pretty effectively.

Second, note Wysocki attended UCLA camps. I believe he was seen at least twice by Coach Bob Palcic in person. At this stage of the game a coach's (especially someone in the caliber of Bob Palcic) evaluation for linemen (who often are hardest to project from high school to college) is lot more important than the star ratings from recruiting services. Note it was not just Palcic and Neuheisel. Wysocki also had offers from the staff of Jim Harbaugh and Mike Riley, two of the better coaches out in the West Coast.

Third, hauling in three OL recruits at this stage of the game is pretty significant given this year was already supposed to be a weak year in California for OL recruits. With three guys in fold, CRN and his staff will probably try to round out the class with 2 or 3 more OLs. Not to mention assembling all these big bodies will also get the attention of QB recruits CRN is targeting this season.

Fourth, Wysocki becomes the second recruit out of Los Alamitos in as many years. Of course last year it was Shaquille Richardson, who now has a long way to go to make his way back into UCLA. But given Richardsons' UCLA connections, perhaps there is some modicum of hope that they will be motivated to do what it takes off the field to prove themselves as worthy Bruins. Anyway, that is for another day. For the purpose of this development, it is interesting to see UCLA opening up a pipeline to a solid program from the OC.

So, enjoy this ride a bit. It is especially fun because it is a little predictable. During most of June we were hearing snickers about how UCLA wasn't getting any recruits. Now that the commitments are popping, we are going to hear comments about how these guys are not top-25 recruits. Yet if you look beyond the surface news, you will see the strategy which UCLA is pursuing recruiting under Neuheisel.

I don't think we have had this kind of strategic staff when it comes to recruiting at UCLA in decades. I am sure there will be bumps in the road as part of recruiting roller coaster but on balance, we are going to be just fine under CRN. It is fun stuff and we (especially for recruiting junkies) should soak it in a bit. Oh and welcome to Westwood Ben.
